What the data shows
By funding type: 30 government, 357 aided, 57 DSS, 40 private, 31 international and 2 unclassified. Of the 441 that state a teaching medium, 104 teach mainly in English, 250 mainly in Chinese and 87 use a mix. An annual fee is published by 86 of the 517; fees run from Free to HK$291,770, with a median of about HK$39,690. Of these, 110 schools have a through-train, feeder or nominated link with another school. Of the 517, 282 have a religious background. The oldest dates back to 1818; the newest opened in 2010.
Hong Kong dropped the official EMI/CMI labels in the 2010 fine-tuning; the medium above is each school's own, not an official designation. Fees are the published annual tuition and exclude other charges.
How secondary school places are allocated
Government and aided secondary schools admit through the Secondary School Places Allocation system. It has a Discretionary Places stage, in which a family may apply directly to two schools, followed by Central Allocation, which draws on the student's internal assessment results and the choices the family has ranked.
Bands are widely discussed and widely misunderstood. The Education Bureau bands students, not schools, into three groups for allocation purposes. The familiar labels attached to schools are compiled by third parties from observed intake, not published by the government, so this site does not host them.
The language of instruction is a more concrete thing to compare. Hong Kong retired the official English-medium and Chinese-medium designations in the 2010 fine-tuning, so what a school teaches in today is its own arrangement and can vary by subject and by year group. Direct Subsidy Scheme and private secondary schools admit outside the allocation system altogether.
