How special school placement works
Special schools serve students with special educational needs whose needs cannot be met with support in an ordinary school. They are publicly funded and cover a range of provisions, including schools for students with intellectual disability, physical disability, visual or hearing impairment, and social development needs.
Placement is not an application. The Education Bureau arranges it through central referral, normally after professional assessment, and a family cannot enrol a child directly the way it would at a mainstream school. The route usually begins with the child's current school, a paediatrician, or an educational psychologist.
This directory is therefore for orientation rather than for applying: it lets you see which schools exist, what provision each makes, and where they are. If you are at the start of the process, the guides below on early identification and support arrangements are a more useful place to begin.
