What the data shows
By funding type: 33 government, 420 aided, 21 DSS, 73 private and 41 international. Of the 507 that state a teaching medium, 128 teach Chinese in Putonghua, 301 teach Chinese in Cantonese, 47 are bilingual and 31 teach in English. An annual fee is published by 54 of the 588; fees run from HK$7,370 to HK$154,000, with a median of about HK$55,000. Of these, 133 schools have a through-train, feeder or nominated link with another school. Of the 588, 328 have a religious background. The oldest dates back to 1851; the newest opened in 2025.

How Primary One admission works
Government and aided primary schools admit through the Primary One Admission system, which runs in two stages. About half the places are filled in the Discretionary Places stage, where a family applies to a single school of its choice and a published points table decides the outcome. The rest are filled by Central Allocation, which is tied to the school net of the family's home address.
Direct Subsidy Scheme and private primary schools sit outside that system entirely. They admit on their own terms and their own timetable, so a family can pursue them in parallel with the Primary One Admission process without giving anything up. This is why many families run both tracks at once.
Linkage is the detail most often missed. A through-train primary school guarantees its pupils a secondary place; nominated and feeder links pass on a share of places rather than all of them. The distinction changes what a primary place is actually worth, and it is recorded on each school's profile here.
