By funding type: 778 non-profit-making and 165 private. An annual fee is published by 484 of the 943; fees run from HK$18,000 to HK$240,900, with a median of about HK$53,436. Of the 943, 711 join the Kindergarten Education Scheme (voucher). The oldest dates back to 1860; the newest opened in 2025.

Choosing a kindergarten in Hong Kong
Kindergartens cover K1 to K3, and the single biggest structural difference between them is the Kindergarten Education Scheme. Schools that join it receive government subsidy and offer free or heavily reduced half-day places; schools that stay out set their own fees. Both kinds can be excellent, and the scheme is a funding arrangement rather than a quality signal.
Admission is by direct application to each school, with a central Registration Certificate step for K1. There is no allocation system and no catchment: a family may apply anywhere. In practice this means the calendar matters more than the strategy, because each school publishes its own application window and interview dates.
Curriculum labels are worth reading carefully. Most local kindergartens follow the Education Bureau's curriculum guide whatever they call their approach, so a Montessori or Reggio description usually signals emphasis rather than a wholly different programme. Visit if you can, and weigh the commute honestly — three years of a difficult journey is a real cost.
