PN / N-class Application Guide: When to Apply, How to Choose, and the K1 Link

PN (the pre-nursery N-class) is the year before kindergarten, and many parents treat it as a stepping stone into a preferred kindergarten. This guide covers what PN is, when to apply, how to choose, and its link to K1.

Last updated: 29 April 2026

PN (Pre-Nursery, often called N-class) is the preparatory class before kindergarten K1, usually for children aged 2 to 3. PN isn't compulsory and not every kindergarten offers it, but it has become a step many parents use to position for a preferred kindergarten.

Why parents value PN/N-class

The main reason is priority or progression to K1: many kindergartens prioritise or interview their own PN pupils for K1. In other words, a PN place at a preferred kindergarten can pave the way to K1.

When to apply

PN applications generally open about a year before entry, with timing varying by school (some accept applications year-round, others have fixed windows). Popular schools have limited places and stiff competition, so watch your target schools' announcements early. See the kindergarten interview guide.

Half-day, full-day and child care centres

  • Kindergarten-attached PN: follows the kindergarten model, half-day or full-day.
  • Child care centre (SWD-registered): serves under-2 and 2–3 age groups, suited to families needing longer care.

The two differ in admissions and fees, so choose by your family's needs.

Fees and vouchers

PN/N-class is generally outside the Free Quality Kindergarten Education Scheme and mostly self-financed, with fees varying by school. The scheme mainly covers K1–K3. Confirm actual fees and subsidies with each school, and see the school fees guide.

How to choose a PN

  1. Decide on the K1 kindergarten you want, then check whether it offers PN and its progression policy.
  2. Compare location, half/full day, teaching ethos and fees.
  3. Note application windows and interview arrangements, and prepare early.

To find PN / nursery options, browse all kindergartens or filter the search by Pre-Nursery; for the wider factors in choosing a kindergarten, see How to choose a kindergarten. Planning PN early can improve your chances at a preferred kindergarten.

Frequently asked questions

Does a PN/N-class place guarantee promotion to the same school's K1?
Not necessarily. Many kindergartens give their own PN pupils priority or an interview for K1, but whether it's automatic depends on the school's policy — some still interview, and places are limited. Always confirm with the school first.
Is PN/N-class covered by the Free Quality Kindergarten Education Scheme?
Generally no. The scheme mainly subsidises K1–K3; PN/N-class is usually self-financed. Confirm fees and policy with each school.
Are PN and N-class the same thing?
Broadly yes. The class for 2–3-year-olds is commonly called PN (Pre-Nursery) or N-class; some sit within kindergartens, others in SWD-registered child care centres, with slightly different service formats.
